"Evening in Kenwood"

"Evening in Kenwood" Bill Brandt 1931-35

This photo is of three young couples in the 30's making out in a large open field or a park area, you can def. tell that these are younger couples by looking at the closest couple, the girl is wearing a long skirt that shows some skin and back then that wasnt really a fashion style for older or middle aged women. Composition wise this is a very lively piece, the couples are spread out and move to the background in a curve formation, the couples also are used to keep the eye moving from front to back of the picture, from the couples you go straight into the horizon (which i do like because it seems that some photographers try to focus on the people only rather than capturing everything about that moment and i think the horizon is a big part in this photo it makes the viewer know that these couples are in a very open forest area). The perspective of this photo is pretty cool, the photographer is right down to the level of the first couple and it gives the viewer a feeling like they are there in that field watching what is happening. What drew was the movement of the piece, the multiple couples really fasinated me. I love the light in the photo also, the lower position of the sun casts these deep shadows in the wrinkles of the couples clothing which really adds to that feeling that you are there, small details in the clothing really brings the photo to life. I also was drawn to the fact that there was not a dominating amount of light, the lighting is very mellow and romantic which goes with the vibe of the young romantic couples.

  1. Nice work! Good point about the light- the photographer shows a subtle transition through the value scale, without getting overly contrasty- also, check the shadows and the forest background- just a hint of texture and detail to give the eye something to latch on to. Now, take those awesome insights and observations you just offered, go out and git some pictures!
