KIDS OF SURVIVAL: THE ART AND LIFE OF TIM ROLLINS

i am watching this documentary called "kids of survival" and it is about artist Tim Rollins, Rollins has opened up his Bronx workshop to disadvantaged youths in the neighborhood. Rollins helps the kids take a break from the hardships of life in the Bronx by giving them an area to put their artistic abilities to work. Rollins emphasizes the importance of education considering that 80% of males in the Bronx didnt finish high school, education is one of the most important things in Rollins studio. he says, "if you dont plan on going to college get your ass out dont even waste my pencil lead" that quote alone shows his idea of education in the kids life. Rollins along with the members of K.O.S (the name of the group of kids) take on multiple projects dealing with current issues in each others lives and society, for example one young man Carlos finds that he may be infected with the AIDS virus and puts that emotion into a large scale piece of work using cow blood as his medium. The group has their work comissioned by many organizations and had their work displayed in some of the most popular galleries in the New York area. Here is a little clip of the documentary! please go out and watch this its amazing and inspiring to anyone who looks to be an educator!!!
